scaffolding

when the height of wall or column or other structural member exceed about 1.5m a temporary structure usually of timber,is erected close to the work provide a safe working platform for the workers and to provide a limited space for the storage of plant and building materials. this temporary framework is known as scaffolding.

                              components of scaffolding

 

1.standard: these are vertical member of framwork, supported on the ground or drums or embeded into                     the ground 

2.ledgers: these are horizontal member parallel to wall

3.putlogs: these are transvers member, placed at right angle to the wall with one end supported on 

                                              ledgers end other on the wall.

4.transoms:there are putlog but their both end  are supported on ledgers.

5.bracing:this are diagonal member fixed on the standards.

6.guard rail:this is rail,provide like a ledgers, at the working level.

7.toe board:these are board ,placed parallel to ledgers and support the putlogs,to give protection at the                       level of working platform.

8.boarding:these are horizontal platform to support workman and material.these are supported on the                         putlogs.

types of scaffolding

1.single scaffolding:this is most type of scaffolding  and is widely used in construction of  brickwork.

2.double scaffolding:this scaffolding is stronger then the single scaffolding.it is used in the construction      of stonework.

3.needle scaffolding:needle scaffolding is used under the following circumstance

1)ground is weak to support the standards.

2)construction of upper  part of the wall is to be carried out

3)it is require to keep the ground near wall free for traffic etc.

4.trestle scaffolding:the working platform is supported on movable contrivances such as ledgers etc.

                                used for painting  and repair work up to 5m

5.suspended scaffolding:this is light weight scaffolding used for repair works such as painting,pointing etc.this working platform is suspended from roof by means of wire ropes or chain etc.

6.steel scaffolding:in place of timber,steel pipe can be effectively used for the scaffolding work.

7.patented scaffolding:the working platform is supported on brackets which can be adjusted at any                                               suitable height.
